Full Rewire vs Partial Rewire
Rewiring can involve replacing wiring throughout a property or renewing selected circuits and areas. The appropriate approach depends on the installation rather than a preference for the largest or smallest job.
What Is a Full Rewire?
A full rewire replaces the fixed wiring throughout the property within an agreed specification.
Planning includes circuits, socket and switch positions, lighting points and protection requirements. The work can involve significant disruption, so access and preparation need careful discussion.
The quotation should make clear what is included and how associated work will be handled.
What Is a Partial Rewire?
Partial rewiring focuses on particular circuits, rooms or alterations.
It may be appropriate where selected wiring needs replacement while other parts remain suitable. Retained wiring must be assessed for continued use and compatibility with the proposed work.
A partial rewire should not leave identified wider defects unaddressed without explanation.
How Is the Scope Decided?
The electrician considers the installation’s condition, relevant test findings and your plans.
A refurbishment might require new wiring in one area. More extensive deterioration may support a broader recommendation. The proposal should explain the reasoning.
Comparing Quotations
Check the areas covered, number of electrical points, consumer unit work, testing and certification.
Also clarify access arrangements and whether plastering, decoration or other making good is included. Two quotations may describe very different scopes despite using the same word: rewiring.
